The phrase in the scroll is from Revelation 14:7 and like the trumpet refers to Vincent's preaching about the Last Judgment. The phrase in the book is a slight variant of Mark 13:37. It says, Omnibus dico, Vigilate / Secundum Marcum c. 13 v. 37, "I say to everyone, Be wakeful / According to Mark, chapter 13 verse 37."

The child on the blanket refers to the many children who were cured or recalled to life by the intercession of St. Vincent. The mitre on the right refers to the Pope's offer, refused by the saint, to make him a bishop and cardinal.
